Clemson’s junk runs on the school calendar. When the spring semester ends, a lot of furniture isn’t worth the trip home: the particleboard desk, a wobbly bookshelf, the lamp with a dented shade. Here’s what the city, Pickens County and a hauler can each do with it.
When does Clemson move-out happen?
For spring 2027, in early May. Clemson University’s calendar sets the dates that matter:
- Spring classes: January 6 to April 30
- Residence halls close: May 1 at 10am, with no summer storage
- Commencement: May 6 and 7
Off-campus leases set their own end dates, so check yours rather than assuming it matches the university. Even so, the first week of May is when much of Clemson packs up at once. Our Clemson move-out guide goes into more detail on planning around it.
Can the city pick it up instead?
For many big items, yes, if the address is inside city limits. The City of Clemson’s sanitation page describes a curbside bulk pickup you book by calling 864-653-2053 at least 24 hours ahead. Going by that page:
- It lists sofas, chairs, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers and tires.
- Appliance doors must be removed or chained shut.
- Tires and appliances carry what the city calls a “small fee.”
- Contractor debris isn’t collected.
- Electronics go out on a separate special pickup on your sanitation day.
Rules and fees change, so confirm with that number before you drag a sofa to the curb. If you’d rather not schedule it, or the pile is more than a few pieces, that’s where we come in.
What about Pickens County centers?
They work for county residents, not for businesses. Pickens County’s recycle centers take bagged trash, appliances, electronics, paint in a separate area and up to four passenger tires a day, and the county uses a residency decal. Its landfill in Liberty takes furniture and mattresses only during windows it posts, so a couch can be harder to get rid of than a washer.
If your rental is in Pendleton instead, Anderson County’s rules apply; our Pendleton page covers them.
Clearing a rental between tenants
Landlords usually need the whole unit empty, not one couch moved. A rental cleanout covers what tenants leave behind: a mattress propped in a closet, a broken recliner, a grill on the back deck, bags of clothes, a microwave nobody claimed. Send photos of each room and we confirm a price from them. We load from wherever things sit, second-floor bedrooms included, and sweep up where the junk was. Stairs add $25–$50, and mattresses add $15–$25 each for disposal.
Where does usable furniture go?
To a new owner, when it’s in good shape. We set aside clean, usable furniture and working appliances for donation or a resale shop. The Oconee Habitat ReStore picks up donations in Clemson, though it turns down mattresses, box springs, appliances that don’t work and tube TVs. Goodwill has a Clemson store at 1051 Tiger Blvd. For a single heavy piece, such as a sleeper sofa in a basement apartment, see furniture removal.
To see a ballpark before you text us, run your pile through the estimator, then send a photo to (864) 555-0142 and we’ll confirm the price.
